Many CAS learned to shoot in the military or in law enforcement. For
many years, the prevailing wisdom had shooters in the pose pictured to the right.
There are some things in this pose that are really good for accurate,
bullseye type shooting. The gun is lined up nicely through the arm and
across the shoulders. The off-hand is anchored at the waist providing
solid balance.
However, this stance is not well suited to action pistol shooting.. The
body position doesn't lend itself to transitions between guns or to transitions
between targets. It's difficult to move while maintaining the critical
alignment needed to shoot accurately in this position.
So How Should I Stand?
For action shooting games, you still want to maintain a balanced stance.
However, you need a more athletic stance, and a stance that is more flexible for
movement, addressing targets, and gun transitions.
In
this pose, there are several things that lend themselves better to action
shooting.
- The shooter is standing much more square to the line. This facilitates
transitions from target to target in a shooting string.
- The off hand is anchored on the next gun. This provides a solid balance and
will facilitate the transition to that gun. If a long gun is the next in the
sequence, the off hand could either be anchored on the other pistol or on the
long gun to facilitate the transition.
- Posture is leaning slightly forward, knees are slightly bent (though you
can't see that in the picture), and shooter is well balanced. This will
facilitate lateral or downrange movement if that is required after the pistol
string.
