Home Tips and Help

Now that you've seen the video clips, you're probably wondering what I'm using for guns. The guns in the Stage Run are different from what I'm shooting now. Those are all 45 Colt in caliber and:

  • Stainless Ruger Vaquero's with the following changes:
  • Bead blast the frame to reduce glare
  • Serrate the back of the front sight to make it quicker to pick up.
  • Deepen and widen the back sight to make it easier to find the front.
  • Bevel the front of the cylinder to make holstering smoother.
  • Hone and polish the chambers for speedier reloads.
  • Install the Ron Power Free-Spin Pawl for easier loading.
  • Install the Ron Power Hammer and Trigger kit for a half cock and crisper trigger.
  • Set the trigger pull to 1 pound.
  • Install a lighter mainspring for easier cocking, but not so light that I don’t catch it while re-cocking the gun.
  • Install a set of Eagle Gunfighter grips to better fit my hands.
  • Polish all internal parts for smoother action.
  • Turn barrel and file front sight for POA adjustment with my loads.
  • Install the Brownells Round Hammer Strut to improve lock time.
  • Install hammer stops so the hammer doesn't move much past the full cock position<.

  • Marlin Cowboy with the following changes:
  • All internal parts smoothed for better operation.
  • Trigger pull reduced to 2 pounds and creep removed.
  • Firing pin was welded up to be a one-piece and the spring in the bolt was removed.
  • The lever catch spring was replaced with a lighter one.
  • The mainspring was replaced with a lighter one, but not too light so the lock time is still quick.
  • The lever safety spring was relieved but not removed. I don’t notice it when shooting.
  • The lever was wrapped in leather.
  • An inch removed from the stock for easier access to the lever.
  • Marbles Flat Top rear sight.

  • Winchester 97. With an action job and a few other modifications:
  • Chamber lengthened to the correct size.
  • Forcing cone lengthened.
  • Barrel cup to 20 inches with tubes installed.
  • Real BIG bead.
  • Left extractor modified to a coil spring.
  • Beefed up ejector spring.

The next batch are in .357. Another pair of Vaqueros, this time blued. Uberti '73's. The same Winchester shotgun. My SxS is an SKB Model 150. Modifications are similar to those listed above.
